Orquidia Violeta
Textile Artist | San Salvador, El Salvador
Orquidia Violeta is a mestizo Indigenous-Salvadoran-American textile artist. Orquidia crossed the US border as a six-year-old refugee, went on to earn an Associate of the Arts degree in Los Angeles, and is now a textile artist living in SE Portland. Orquidia continuously challenges herself by incorporating complex new methods into her work such as machine and hand embroidery, knitting, circular weaving, appliqué, soft-sculpture, fiber-collage, drawing, painting and eco-dyeing using salvaged fabrics and found objects, to tell colorful stories about the diversity of people and the natural world we live in. Orquidia is especially interested in modern reinterpretations of traditional indigenous art-making practices.
